Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 1: Strange are the ways of the Union Government as far as tackling of the issue in Kashmir is concerned. Issue in Kashmir because it is the extremists, fundamentalists and terrorists who have vitiated the atmosphere in Kashmir by their seditious slogans and activities. It would be misnomer to term communal issue in Kashmir problem of Kashmir; it is communal and religious issue and it should be described like that in the larger national interest and in the interest of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and other patriotic sections of society in the state.
As said, the NDA Government is behaving in a strange manner and it is making it public too.On Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry reviewed the Kashmir situation and also discussed the modus operandi the all-party delegation would follow in Kashmir.
As per reports, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who would be leading 35-member delegation to J&K, will not meet any separatist unless any separatist approaches him and says that he would be willing to discuss solution within the Indian Constitution. It is not going to happen. One must appreciate this line of the Union Home Ministry.
However, the report which has created confusion and led the people to doubt the modus operandi is that other members of delegation could, if they so like, meet any or all separatist leaders, including Geelani.
All-party delegation is not a private effort; it is the government's initiative taken at the behest of the opposition parties whose representatives will be part of the big contingent. No one is willing to buy the argument that "we cannot prevent any MP from meeting with separatists in his personal or private capacity". They would be part of the official delegation and they have to conduct themselves as one man.
Any meeting with any separatist by any member of the official all-party delegation to Kashmir would mean confusion as well as according further legitimacy to those who have been playing havoc with the nation and the nationalists in the state.
The BJP-led NDA Government must review its stand. The best thing to do would be to scrap the very idea of sending all-party delegation to Kashmir. If at all, the Government wants a visit of all-party delegation to the state, it should send it to Jammu.
