Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Sept 1: A drama was enacted by the opposition National Conference on the streets of Srinagar on Thursday when some of its leaders, enjoying Z-plus security cover, held anti-government demonstration.
The NC that witnessed its worst ever defeat during the 2014 polls staged a dharna outside the Civil Secretariat here to protest against what the party termed 'continued use of pellet guns and cycle of violence in Kashmir.'
Led by the former minister in Omar Abdullah's cabinet and MLA Khanyar, Ali Muhammad Sagar, the protesters staged a dharna on the road outside the Secretariat.
However, what proved counter-productive for this party of 15 MLAs was the drama it enacted. The leaders in dharna were surrounded and guarded by the heavy security cover. The pedestrians were not impressed with the drama of the NC leaders.
There were several who in open reprimanded the NC leaders and workers over staging such a drama. "Wasn't it NC government that introduced pellet guns in Kashmir in 2010? You were then beating the trumpet of safeguarding peoples' lives through such measures. What has happened to those of your claims," a pedestrian shouted at one of the NC workers present in the protest.
As the pictures of NC's protest were uploaded on social media, netizens ridiculed the party. "What kind of drama is this? Under the Z- security cover these leaders are protesting against the government. Do they still have the notion that Kashmiris are fools and would be impressed," commented a netizen on social media.
More bizarre was when Sagar spoke to media during the protest. He demanded that New Delhi must initiate dialogue with the separatists as well as militants. "Talks should not only be held with Hurriyat but also those holding guns. This has happened during the BJP government when L K Advani was the deputy prime minister. Joint Secretary (Home) did talk with militants at a guest house in Cheshma Shahi," he said.
The protestors later raised slogans after which they were detained by police for some time.
However, NC's such desperation to come under the limelight and grab the headlines has ended on a sour note as people already have been taking jibes at the NC leadership for fishing in the troubled waters. "Where were these leaders in 2010 and during the floods of 2014? The sole purpose of this party is to stay relevant no matter what would it take. They aren't concerned about peoples' hardships but about taking jibes at the PDP for it is now in power," commented Zaid Shabir, a local.
Meanwhile, one of the NC workers present in the rally said on the condition of anonymity that he along with several others were bundled in vehicles and were asked to raise slogans against the usage of pellets in Kashmir. "Otherwise, we all know that it is not going to help in any way. Everyone knows, it was the NC that brought pellets," he said.
