Early Times Report

Rajouri, Sept 4: There has been a huge controversy going on at Rajouri regarding cellular towers erected near residential areas, schools and hospitals.
Recently inhabitants of ward No.5 including borders of Pahari hostel have raised voices against the District Administration/ Muniucipal Committee officials for allowing installation of cellular towers in their wards without considering the health problems of the residents.
"There is nothing against mobile companies and we should appreciate the development in this sector but there are certain rules and regulations that need to be followed for setting up a cellular tower in any locality" said Haji M.S Qureshi and Rajionder Kumar.
Before allowing any company to install its towers Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have to make sure that there is no interference with other wireless users, and no obstruction to any other microwave links existing in the area.
Operators have to get the requisite permission from the concerned local authorities/ Municipal Corporation before installation of tower & should also check the emission level so that it does not cover areas with public exposure.
There should not be any residential place or office in front of the antenna at a height comparable to the antenna in the exclusion zone.
According to experts continuous exposure to a cell tower located within 50 meter of residential area may carries the cancer risk and besides it people living near the mobile towers face other disorders like extreme fatigue, headaches, sleep disorders, memory loss, depression, hearing loss, joint pains, skin problems, cardiovascular problems, among others.
"Some officials in the Rajouri Administration and in the Municipal Committee (MC) for their vested interests have allowed the mushrooming of the Cellular towers in many residential areas under the limit of MC and in other towns of the district" said Mohd Atif and Mahant Singh.
Boys Pahari Hostel boarders including Naresh Singh and inhabitants of ward No.5 alleged that tainted officials have accorded permission for the erection of a cellular tower and installation of a Saw Mill near the hostel & both are causing lot of inconvenience to the people as well to the students ( borders).
According to revised guidelines by the DoT for ground-based as well as rooftop towers, there shall be no nearby buildings right in front of the antennae with height comparable to the lowest antenna .
For instance for six antennas in one direction there should be no building or structure in front up to 55 meters. For four antennae the safe distance specified is 45 meters and it should be 35 meters in case of two antennas and 20 for one, says new guidelines.
But all these guidelines were not followed in Rajouri town where most of the cellular towers were installed on the roof tops & in the densely populated wards and the areas in its vicinity where other building are situated just within a radius of 10-20 meters.
