Kashmir is a problem, says Radha | All-party delegation | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 4: All party delegation is in Kashmir. The ruling coalition consisting of PDP and Congress expects some break through. It expects that the delegation would appreciate the concerns of Kashmiri Muslims and may recommend some major "Kashmir-specific confidence building measures" after it returns to Delhi on September 5. Only the other day, CM Mehbooba Mufti said in Srinagar that the people of Kashmir not only needed economic packages but also a comprehensive political package that not only resolves the "political issue of Kashmir" but also "addresses the external dimension" of the issue. The main opposition has also upped the ante and said that it is for both for autonomy within the Indian Constitution, as also for result-oriented India-Pakistan dialogue. It has also batted for Kashmir-specific confidence building measures. The separatists like APHC M chairman Mirwaiz and his ilk have said that the Prime Minister's visit to the state is a futile exercise, as the Government of India has not declared Jammu & Kashmir a disputed territory. A number of members of the so-called Kashmiri civil society have also expressed almost similar views. They have also decided to boycott the all-party delegation. The fact is that the opinion in Kashmir is divided. Former interlocutor Radha Kumar, who doesn't know anything about Jammu & Kashmir notwithstanding the fact that she served as interlocutor for one year and had visited the State a number of times before and after 2010, has also used the opportunity to throw her weight behind the Kashmiri separatists saying Kashmir is a problem that needs a political resolution. She, like others, has urged New Delhi to announce some major political package in Kashmir aimed at resolving the Kashmir problem. She said economic packages would not do. Earlier, Radha had made common cause with the NC and lambasted senior Congress leader and former minister Makhan Lal Fotedar for his statement on autonomy/the 1975 Indira-Sheikh accord. "It is absurd to claim that Indira-Abdullah accord has already settled the Kashmir issue. Kashmir is an issue and it needs to be addressed. If it is not an issue then what for the interlocutors visited the state and even we have in our recommendations mentioned that this issue needs to be addressed," she had said, and added that as far as the Government of India was concerned, it was "very much serious" in resolving the Kashmir issue. The NC is a bitter critic of Fotedar; it calls him a traitor, saboteur and intriguer, anti-NC and anti-autonomy. It appears from her statement that she has not studied the 1975 accord. However, Radha admitted that the separatist leadership in Kashmir is highly divided and that it has no strategy. "The Government of India is very much serious in bringing Hurriyat leaders across the table. However, the Hurriyat leaders have no proper strategy and they are beating about the bush. Hurriyat leaders should come across the table and find a lasting solution to Kashmir problem. Centre is serious but the Hurriyat leaders do not make an effort and they lack strategy," she had said. What she said about the Hurriyat leadership is not something knew; she only said what is too well-known. However, what was highly disgusting was her statement on the status of Kashmir. By terming Kashmir as a problem, she has left none in any doubt that she is a stooge of anti-India forces. How could she seek to vitiate the atmosphere in the state by making a nasty statement? There is not Kashmir problem; there is problem in Kashmir and the problem is fundamentally communal. If she feels that the nation will allow another communal partition of India, then it can be said without any hesitation that she is living in a fool's paradise. She, or for that matter other mercenaries, cannot unsettle the settled in Jammu & Kashmir. |
