MLA or dictator? Nursery massacred on his orders in Rajouri

Early Times Report

Rajouri, Sept 4: At a time when the government stresses on plantation of more and more trees, the authorities here have massacred a full-grown nursery by cutting over 2,500 trees to pave way for construction of community hall at Lamberi block in Nowshehra Tehsil here even as vacant land was available for the purpose.
Officials said despite the availability of around 20 kanal of open government land near the nursery, the office of the Block Development Officer Lamberi got the trees chopped off as it was decided so by an MLA, whose close relative is undertaking the construction of the upcoming CFC building.
The locals said the MLA and his workers had eye on the trees at the nursery and thus got them cut down. "Hundreds of trees including those of mulberry whose cutting is an offence were axed overnight and taken way by the political workers of the BJP MLA," the locals said.
They said the nursery was blessing for the area. "These trees would give us fresh air and shade, we don't know why this BJP MLA is resorting to hooliganism even to massacre trees," the locals said.
Sources said there was a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the upcoming construction. "Basically after the construction of the community hall, the MLA plans to get more buildings constructed in the nursery land so that his relatives get more construction projects… This way his workers get trees and his relatives will get more works. It's like killing two birds with a stone," said a source.
The locals said there was no need to undertake construction by uprooting nursery when adequate land was available in the vicinity.
When contacted BDO, Lamberi, Kulbushan Sharma failed to give any convincing reply. "Basically we are trying to ascertain the losses (through cutting of trees) and see that what all can be done can be decided," the BDO told Early Times.
When asked that mulberry trees have been axed despite ban on such activities, the BDO avoided the question. "We will see what all can be done."
Meanwhile the locals have appealed the divisional commissioner Jammu to personally look into the matter or that they will file a complaint with the National Green Tribunal.
