Dialogue instead of war can resolve Indo-Pak problems | | | When Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, voiced her opposition to war against Pakistan she seemed to be right because four wars in the past had neither resolved the Kashmir issue more promoted cordial ties between India and Pakistan. In fact in the four wars people suffered a lot and those in the border belts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan suffered heavily. Hence thinking of war was not the solution and Mehbooba aired her views possibly in the context of growing scare caused among the border people living in Jammu and Kashmir following Modi's declaration that he would not spare the terrorists who attacked the Uri Army camp in which 18 soldiers were martyred. And this incident had led to war hysteria in India and Pakistan, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti said she and her Government were against war with Pakistan."We're against war with Pakistan,"sources quoted Mehbooba as saying while addressing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) General Council meeting It was the first major meeting of the party after the outbreak of unrest in the Valley. She expressed her displeasure over the war rhetoric between New Delhi and Islamabad following the Uri attack in which 18 Army men were killed and over two dozen injured. "Mehbooba told her party leaders that war was no option as they do not resolve any issue," This also comes as a departure from Mehbooba's recent hardline statements wherein she had threatened to deal the protesting youth sternly and accused Pakistan of fomenting trouble in Kashmir. Mehbooba launched a tirade against Pakistan saying while she and her party had been advocating for a dialogue between New Delhi and Islamabad, Pakistan was carrying military drills while landing F-16s on motorways. Chief Minister seemed apologetic over the killings of civilians at the hands of armed forces but was quick on to say that she or her party was not to be blamed for the killings. The Chief Minister also defended the use of pellet guns on the protesters saying that the scale of protests was such that there was no other option but to stop the protesters with the use of force. Mehbooba also accused the protesting youth of planning a downfall of PDP by creating "ongoing disturbances". Mehbooba feels isolated and aloof. It was understood if the separatists created added problems for her Government. The separatists had to do it because they thrive on turmoil and this time they did not want Mehbooba to share power with the BJP. What is disturbing is the way she has been let down by some mainstream political parties, especially the National Conference and the Congress. Yes, Mehbooba should not expect any support from the NC and the Congress because the two are waiting for the fall of the Government so that the NC and the Congress could win back power after the fresh elections. Whatever may have been the interests of the Congress and the NC but this is the time when peace in Kashmir is needed. Peace for development. Peace for resolution of energy crisis, peace for resolving problem unemployment. And since BJP leadership in the centre has decided to support Mehbooba peace may return to Kashmir within a week or so. |
