Improper fencing at Dachigam National Park endangering species | | | Early Times Report
srinagar, Oct 18: The proposal for demarcation of Dachigam Wildlife Park is yet to see the light of the day as the authorities have failed to clear its boundaries posing a serious threat to its species. The government had made a proposal for the demarcation of the park, which spreads over141 sq km. However, so far the authorities have not identified its area, which extends in North to Dara Block, Sindh Forest Division, Overa Aru wildlife Sanctuary and in South to Ridges of Cheshmashahi forests, Khanmoh Khrew forests, Hajin and Narastan & Zowirstan forests. Its boundaries in east extend to lake Marsar and in the West Harwan water reservoir and Zabarwan Forests. "It only appears on papers that Dachigam spreads over 141 sq km but the authorities have failed to identify the area. Even a proposal was framed years ago for its proper demarcation, which has been shelved for unknown reasons," said an official of the Wild Life department. "Some areas have been demarcated but with fragile fencing. Anybody easily enters the Dachigam area," the official said. He said the artificial demarcation of its boundaries was done at few places and the civilian population was also residing in its area at several places, posing a serious threat to its species. Officials said with absence of boundaries and fencing, local live stock of the surrounding areas of the Dachigam Wildlife Park goes on a grazing spree in its upper reaches resulting in heavy habitat degradation. "Only the concertina wires are lying in Khrew Khanmoh side of Dachigam and the unabated extraction of stones is being done even inside the Dachigam area as the government has failed to erect proper fencingand boundaries," a group of residents of Khrew said. Fire broke out several times in the Dachigam area with sources saying some outsiders go easily inside the Dachigam due to lack of fencing and posing threat to species. A five-year management plan for the park has said the Dachigam Wildlife Park was grappling for its demarcation from civilian areas due to political interference. "Artificial boundaries are demarcated in fields. Pillars are required for maintaining the integrity of area and law enforcement," it said.
