Amidst crisis in Valley, J&K lost its most apt officer | State's loss is Centre's gain | | Abodh Sharma Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 18: At a time when Valley is on fire for the last over hundred days now, it is shocking that the state lost the Police officer who had developed intricate understanding of Kashmir over the years and has dealt with equally distressing situations effectively on at least two previous occasion and could have been Mehbooba's man Friday in the existing situation as well. Though the state government ousted the said senior officer at a time when he was needed the most, the Union Government appointed him as Joint Secretary in the National Security Council the previous day, wherein he would keep a direct tab on security issues of entire country including Kashmir. Sources in the government revealed that a group of politicians belonging to ruling dispensation got insecure with the importance gained by S M Sahai, ADG J&K Police and projected him in poor light before the Chief Minister to ensure that he was not made the next DGP of the state, which looked highly probable. Sahai, who enjoyed reputation of high level of professional competence and deep understanding of Kashmir, was made a scapegoat for holding a press conference following killing of Burhan Wani on July 8; however, insiders aver that holding of press conference had concurrence of the Chief Minister. "Presence of an officer who understood the paradigms in the Valley at the helm of affairs in the current situation could have been crucial and Sahai has been in the thick of things on at least two previous occasions" said a senior police officer now retired. "He was apparently given charge of the situation at the very outset, only to be alienated later on for reasons best known to the Government" he added. While the group of politicians succeeded in ousting Sahai from the state, his new assignment as Joint Secretary National Security Council has reinstated him at a position where from he would be directly supervising the security situation in Kashmir. Pertinently, he would repot directly to the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the Prime Minister himself. In the meanwhile, the unrest that started in Kashmir following HM militant's killing is now over a hundred days old and there are little signs of its subsiding in the near future. |
