Border farmers in catch 22 situation | No labour to harvest standing crop | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 18: With rabi crop ready for harvest in the region, the farmers in the border villages are in catch 22 situation as there is no labour available for harvesting the standing crop due to ongoing situation at the Indo-Pak border. Known as rice bowl of the state, the border villages along R S Pura and Arnia belts which are most affected by the repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan following surgical strikes on terror launching pads across the LoC in Pak occupied Kashmir. The rabi crop of rice gets ready by mid-October to early November and labour from far of states reach this area for harvesting. In many of these villages, the residents had been evacuated to safer places, but they were constrained to risk their lives and come back to the villages to take care of the standing crop, which is ready for harvesting. Locals told ET that they depended on labour coming from outside the state for harvesting, but this season, they have not tuned up in view of the prevailing war hysteria between India and Pakistan and we are confronted with huge problem. Meanwhile, with residents gradually returning to their villages, they are contemplating cooperating with each other in harvesting rather than waiting for the labour. |
