Profs, Asst Profs make fortune in tuition centres | Staying away from duties | | Saqib Ahmad Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 2: While the government has cracked a whip on private tuition by school teachers, there is no check on the university and college faculties who teach in coaching centers. As the educational institutions continue to remain shut in the Valley amid unrest in the Valley, scores of professors, assistant professors and lecturers from various university and colleges who teach students in tuition centres and stay away from duties. Government imposed a blanket ban on private tuitions by teachers serving in state government run schools last year saying it amounts to "moral turpitude" and is a serious violation of service conduct rules''. However, as per government services Act, government employees can't indulge in private businesses like teaching in tuition centres. Despite that scores of employees of Kashmir University, and other universities, colleges and various other educational institutions and departments including and KAS officer are teaching in coaching centres, which is in a violation of the rules and block job opportunities for unemployed youth in the Valley. Education Minister Naeem Akhtar imposed the ban on private tuitions by school teachers last year. But he remained himself restricted to school teachers and had directed that ban should be imposed strictly on private tuitions by school teachers who get salary of Rs 20,000 and Rs 40,000 but maintained "silence" over the faculty members of colleges and universities who teach in coaching centres and get salary of around Rs 1 lakh per month. According to the details collected, many faculty members of the Kashmir University are involved in practice of private tuitions and as per sources also skip their official duties. A faculty member of the University's Chemistry department teachs in coaching centre, one faculty member of Mathematics department and some employees of the Pharma Department are also involved in practice of private tuitions. There are also reports from other universities, colleges where their faculty members are involved in private practice which is a brazen violation of the rules. "All these professors, assistant professors, KAS officers and doctors get a monthly salary in the range between Rs 70,000 and 1,50,000. Few of them earn over a crore annually by teaching in coaching centres," a senior faculty member of the Kashmir University said. "If they are so much interested in teaching in coaching centres then why don't they resign from government job and allow unemployed educated youth to work on those posts? They most of the times skip their duties thus affecting the academic curriculum in higher educational institutions," the faculty member said. There are also many lectures of higher secondary institutes who are involved in practice of private tuitions. Among them are a senior lecturer of M P Higher Secondary Srinagar, Chadoora Higher Secondary and Girls Higher Secondary Soura. |
