What is out-of-power NC up to?
Attacking Mirwaiz
11/2/2016 10:22:32 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 2: People of Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh defeated the National Conference (NC) in 20014 and the defeat was comprehensive. In Ladakh, it drew blank. In Jammu, it couldn't win even half a dozen seats. In Kashmir, its defeat was all the more humiliating in the sense that Kashmir was its stronghold. The fact of the matter is that the NC could win only 15 seats in house of 87, 13 less as compared to its tally 28 each in 2002 and 2008.
The NC not only suffered a massive defeat in the assembly elections but also in the Lok Sabha election. This, despite the fact that the NC contested the Lok Sabha election in alliance with the Congress, which had lost the elections miserably. That the defeat of the NC in the Lok Sabha election was all the more humiliating can be seen from the fact that even Farooq Abdullah, three-time chief minister, couldn't make it to the Lok Sabha.
It was these defeats that rattled Farooq Abdullah, party president, and Omar Abdullah, working president of the party. Ever since then, they have been tying their best to restore the ground they lost to the PDP in the Valley. They are leaving no stone unturned to achieve their objective but with no result. It remains as popular today as it was in 2002, 2008 and 2014. This failure has further added to their desperation and frustration.
The Abdullahs have gone frustrated and desperate to the extent that they have accused Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq of hobnobbing with spy agencies and important elements in the political establishment in New Delhi. In a way, the Abdullahs' party has charged Mirwaiz with playing dubious role and failing the ongoing movement in the Valley. It launched attack to convince Kashmiri Muslims that the NC, not the Mirwaiz, is the Kashmir's well-wisher and that it is more committed to the Kashmiri cause than the separatists.
The NC has gone to the extent of saying that it has all the details with it and if Mirwaiz so likes, the NC would make all the details public. "Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's proximity to the establishment and intelligence apparatus in New Delhi is a well-known fact and the National Conference does not require sermons from someone who is willing to break bread with intelligence officers in five star hotels in New Delhi," the NC said the other day, and added that the separatist leader's "numerous secret rendezvous with the high and mighty in New Delhi belied his moralistic press statements in Kashmir".
What does the Abdullahs want to achieve by taking on head on Mirwaiz? Even a naïve would in no time say that it's whole objective is to occupy the separatist' space by attacking the separatists and by telling gullible Kashmiri Muslims that that Mirwaiz and the ilk have outlived their utility and the NC is still relevant in Kashmir.
This type of politics will not help the NC or any other political party. It will not only create more problems for Delhi but would also not help them. For, this type of politics only promote lawlessness as we witnessed in Kashmir during all these 70 years of the state's accession. The best course available is politics based on democratic and economic issues.
