Shopkeepers forced to down shutters during 'relaxation' period in Srinagar by 'irate' youth | 50 persons sustain injuries during clashes at Anchar-Soura | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 2: Relaxation as announced by separatists in their protest calendar failed to take off today as some of the youth forced shopkeepers to down their shutters in Lal Chowk and the adjacent areas. Similar reports have also come in from some other areas of Kashmir valley. Reports said that as soon as the shopkeepers started to open their shops a group of youth appeared in Lal Chowk and asked the shopkeepers to down the shutters immediately. When some of the shopkeepers objected over the same the agitated youth said that since whole city is burning how the shopkeepers can open their shops. The youth told the shopkeepers that four youth have been killed in the Soura area by police and security forces and in addition to this dozens of persons have also been injured. These youth dictated terms to the shopkeepers and as such the shops remained closed in the commercially important areas of summer capital of the state. Earlier rumours that Jenab Sahib Shrine in the Soura area has been burnt by police and security forces made round in Srinagar and other areas of Kashmir. The rumours spread like a wild fire and people could be seen discussing the issue in Kashmir especially Srinagar city. At the end of the day rumours remained rumours and the whole issue was blown out of proportions by people having 'vested' interests. Trouble broke out in the Anchar area of Soura after police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) started to carry out cordon and search operations. Groups of people predominantly youth came out of their houses and objected to cordon and search operations. The youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel with the ding dong battle continued during the whole day. Reports said that 50 persons including more than 30 police and CRPF personnel sustained injuries during the day long clashes. While most of the injured civilians have been discharged from the hospital some of them are recuperating at SKIMS-Soura. The situation is stated to be tense with protests going on till late evening. A police spokesman said that 'miscreants' in large number pelted stones heavily upon the deployments at Anchar-Soura in district Srinagar resulting in grievous injuries to SP Hazratbal and 35 other police and security forces personnel. He said that three civilians who were part of the mob also sustained injuries. They were shifted to SKIMS Soura for treatment. The condition of all of them is stated to be stable. "The situation across the valley remained under control barring six incidents of law & order which took place during the day. In district Shopian, miscreants pelted stones upon police and security forces deployments at Dachoo, Rabben, Nagbal and Sugan. Police chased them away by using mild force," said the spokesman. The spokesman said that at Tarzoo-Sopore, miscreants in order to disrupt the normal life, pelted stones upon police and security forces deployment adding that they were chased away. He said that DySP PC Sopore got injured and was shifted to Sub District Hospital Sopore for treatment. |
