Over Rs 10 cr STP rendered defunct in six months | Sewerage being discharged into Lidder | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Pahalgam, Dec 4: Inaugurated just six month ago by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, the 2MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) constructed by UEED at a cost of rupees 10.58Cr at Pahalgam has gone defunct. The Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), according to sources, remained operational for only two weeks. "STP worked for just two weeks or fifteen days. It has developed a technical snag because of which it isn't operational, an official pleading anonymity said. On Saturday, Chief Minister's brother Mufti Tasaduq Hussain, who visited Pahalgam and unofficially reviewed development works, was informed that the STP wasn't operational. "Mufti Tasaduq was informed that Sewerage Treatment Plant is dysfunctional. He expressed shock and promised to take up the issue with concerned authorities," the officer added. He was also told that the sewage that comes to the plant from several hotels and residential areas is being directly flushed out into rive Lidder. "It is shocking that the Sewerage Treatment Plant had become major polluters of the river," he said. Sources said that since July 8, none of the officials or technical staff of UEED is camping on the STP. They claimed that on Mufti Tasaduq's complaint, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has summoned officials of UEED and contractor on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Dr Syed Aabid Rashid Shah is reprted to have also taken strong note of the development. No official from UEED was available for a comment. Pertinent to mention here, 2MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in May this year. With the capacity to drain out two million liters of sewerage per day, the STP has been constructed by UEED at a cost of Rs.10.58 crore, which has been fully funded by Pahalgam Development Authority out of its own resources. The Chief Minister was told that the second and the third phases for laying of more such STPs will cater to the outskirts of Pahalgam. She was informed that after commissioning the fully-automatic STP, the facility will benefit 170 hotels, 650 residential houses and 310 huts, thus paving way for operationalizing the biological disposal of sewerage at the picturesque resort. |
