Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 4: Most newspapers in India published the other day details of the reported telephone call Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had with US-President elect Donald Trump on Monday. The report said that Trump described Nawaz Sharif as a terrific guy. Sharif had called Trump to congratulate the latter for his victory in the presidential election held in November.
Significantly, the readout of the phone call the president-elect had with Sharif did not mention any of the points highlighted and claimed by the Pakistani PM.
"You (Sharif) are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon. As I am talking to you, Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long,", said the report quoting a statement issued by the office of Nawaz Sharif. The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper claimed that the telephonic conversation between Sharif and Donald Trump had become a headline news all over. But the readout released by Trump Transition Team did not find the claims made by the Pakistanis.
The report quoting the statement issued by Sharif's office said "Trump had told Sharif that Pakistan is an 'amazing' country with 'tremendous' opportunities" and "Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people," said the President-elect.
Sharif also invited Trump to visit Pakistan. In his reply, Trump said, "he would love to come to a fantastic country, fantastic place of fantastic people." "Please convey to the Pakistani people that they are amazing and all Pakistanis I have known are exceptional people," said Trump, according to the report.
What was left unsaid in the report was that neither the person who wrote the news report nor the officer concerned in Nawaz Sharif's office who issued the release were privy to what transpired in the telephonic conversation between Sharif and Trump.
What is of great interest is that while the Pakistanis went to town trumpeting the details of the telephonic conversation, the office of Donald Trump issued a statement about the discussion/ phone call the President-elect had with Sharif. There was no mention anywhere in the statement that the President elect waxed eloquence on Nawaz Sharif.
"President elect Donald Trump and Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif spoke today and had a productive conversation about how the US and Pakistan will have a strong working relation in the future ," said the transition team working for Donald Trump. "President-elect Donald Trump also noted that he is looking forward to a lasting and strong personal relationship with Prime Minister Sharif," said the transition team.
But the readout of the phone call the president-elect had with Sharif does not mention any of the points highlighted and claimed by the Pakistani PM. The Presidential transition team did not immediately respond to questions on the statement released by Government of Pakistan. The transition team is headed by vice-president elect Mike Pence.
