'Sidelined' NC leaders desperate to remain relevant | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 4: As the separatist sponsored shutdown in Kashmir has fizzled out and people have resumed their daily chores, the opposition National Conference seems "unhappy" with life returning to normal in the Valley and worst phase being over. During the past few days NC leaders are leaving no stone unturned to appease the separatists and even Pakistan by claiming that neighboring country cannot be blamed for the prevailing unrest in Kashmir and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) is not the part of India. The NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah started it all by daring India to reclaim POK from Pakistan. The NC General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar toed the line of his boss and threatened Delhi of dire consequences if it fails to hold negotiations with the separatists, who took entire Kashmir as hostage for more than four months. On Saturday the National Conference President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah gave clean chit to Pakistan and said it cannot be blamed for the political situation or the current unrest in Kashmir. "The people of J&K have espoused a political sentiment even when there was no external interference and this political sentiment forms the basis of the State's special status that has since been eroded by extra-constitutional machinations. The political issue in Kashmir is a result of historic blunders and broken promises by successive dispensations in New Delhi. The situation today stands compounded because of the present Central Government's refusal to even acknowledge that a problem exists in Kashmir," Omar said. A Kashmir watcher said, "The NC leaders especially father-son duo (Dr Farooq and Omar) are finding it hard to digest that Mehbooba Mufti led government has survived one of the worst onslaughts as they were expecting that the Kashmir unrest would prove to be the last nail in the coffin of PDP-BJP government in JK and BJP would fall in NC's lap, but it didn't happen. NC is toeing the line of separatists to create a scare in Delhi and is provoking separatists and Pakistan to keep the pot boiling." He said, "It's not for the first time that NC leaders have gone out of way to appease Pakistan and separatists they have been doing it whenever they are out of power. They are indulging in gimmicks to make life difficult for the Mehbooba Mufti led government." An analyst said, "Abdullahs and other NC leaders should realize that situation has changed and people have become politically mature. They cannot keep on hoodwinking people by raising hollow slogans and by describing Kashmir as an issue and daring India to reclaim POK. People remember it very well that when Dr Farooq was the Chief Minister he used to advocate bombing POK. Out of power he has changed his colour like a chameleon." He said, "Delhi not giving any importance to NC leaders has left them high and dry. They are throwing tantrums just to attract attention and remain relevant." |
