Hit by note ban, India-Pak trade set to resume: Workers at Attari to get wages in cheques

New Delhi, Dec 9: The India-Pakistan trade through the Attari border is set to resume from Saturday as authorities have convinced porters to accept wages through cheques. The bilateral trade has come to a halt as the contractor has no cash for wages of over 1,400 porters who load and unload trucks at the integrated check post (ICP). The porters were insisting that they should be paid wages in cash and had stopped the work on Thursday. India imports around 150 truckloads of cement, gypsum, dry fruits and others items per day from the neighbouring country through the ICP, but no truck came to India on Thursday and Friday. Assistant commissioner (customs) at the ICP Balwinder Singh said: "On the directions of customs commissioner Capt Sanjay Gehlot, a meeting was called to find a solution to the problem. The labour working at the ICP was convinced that times have changed and now they will be paid through cheque only. The porters agreed to it and decided to resume work from Saturday."
Replying to a query, he said export through the ICP has declined post demonetisation. Only few trucks of cotton yarn or plastic granule are going to Pakistan. The import is normal as over 150 trucks reach India ever day from across the border, he added.
"We have urged banks to help labours encash their salary cheques. We have two ATMs at the ICP and more will be added soon," he said.
