Cabinet heats up, angry CM leaves in huff | 'I am not a puppet' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 9: The first cabinet meeting after shifting of Durbar Move to winter capital proved to be flashpoint of discord between PDP and BJP when heated arguments between the two angered Chief Minister Mehbooba to the extent that she left the meeting in a huff on an extremely annoyed note. A fuming Chief Minister made as hasty retreat, not before admonishing the BJP lot with assertion, "I am not a puppet Chief Minister…..". Soon after this development as the CM left for her residence, all the BJP ministers followed her and made a 'beeline' at her official residence in a vain bid to pacify her. Sources said the cabinet meeting began on a smooth note and took up certain matters in the agenda until in the middle of it acrimonious situation erupted when almost all the BJP ministers in one voice opposed the proposal of the Home department regarding reorganization of the Police Department. Sources said the proposal prepared by the Home department apparently in consultation with the Chief Minister ( as she holds the portfolio) seeks to induct a number of KPS officers into the IPS cadre which was strongly opposed and resented by the BJP ministers, contending the Government of India would not agree to this move. Sources further said seeing BJP ministers opposing the proposal in one voice, the Chief Minister who was supported by her other party colleagues disrupted them saying if this was left to be decided and approved by Centre, then what for she was there in the chair. This being purely a matter of the state government had no scope of Centre agreeing or disagreeing to it, sources said as Chief Minister having said on an angry note. Sources said when the BJP insisted on their 'objections' over giving a nod to the proposal, this infuriated the CM who suddenly left the meeting, much to the shock of the BJP ministers. Sources said the ruling PDP contended that BJP had come with the 'pre occupied' mind in the meeting to raise objections and oppose the proposal with regard to reorganization of the Police department. Sources further said it was actually nothing but a tussle between the KPS and IPS lobby which made BJP raise objections to this proposal. While IPS lobby has been resisting any such kind of induction of KPS officers to the posts of IPS level officers, the government(mainly PDP) favours this move as it would benefit a number of KPS officers who have reached a stage of stagnation, sources said adding that this stagnation is also for the reason that for many years there has been no induction of IPS officers against the higher level posts due to a number of reasons, like seniority issues and certain pending writ petitions in the courts. Sources said after the Chief Minister made a quick move from the meeting, the BJP ministers also went to her residence and kept waiting to pacify her. |
