KPs pin hopes on Govt for passage of Shrines Bill

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 17: Kashmiri Pandits are pinning high hopes that the much talked about Kashmiri Hindu Shrines and Temples Bill will be passed by State Legislature in the budget session beginning on the January 2.
According to sources the KP organisations which have extended full support to Pt. Prem Nath Bhat Memorial Trust in its struggle are hopeful that the Government will definitely enact the law this budget session in this regard.
However sources said that Government on its own has no problem in passage of the Bill but the controversy within some Hindu groups in this regard is creating the greatest hurdle in this regard.
The opposition made by Dharmarth Trust and other individual trusts like Shri Chinar Trust etc has been one of the impediment in the way and this even forced the BJP Legislators to oppose the Bill during last NC-Congress Government when it was put to vote in the Assembly.
During that time the BJP which was in the opposition created a rucks in the House and stalled the passage of the Bill to please the Dharmarth Trust and other individual trusts in this regard.
However this time when the BJP is in Government and the Party has given a word to Kashmiri Pandits regarding the passage of the Bill , it will be seen what modus operandi the party will adopt in the House this time in case the Bill is tabled to vote.
Previously in opposition the NC had strongly advocated for passage of Bill and the then leader of Opposition Abdul Rahim Rather had tabled a private member's bill in the House during the rule of Ghulam Nabi Azad.
However at that time the Government assured the house that it will bring the Bill on its own and on the basis of that assurance Rather withdrew his Bill.
Sources said later when NC-Congress was in alliance the Bill was again tabled in the House but the ruling alliance showed its disinterest in its passage and took the refuge under the BJP which created a rucks in the House to stall its passage.
Sources said ow when BJP is in the Government and both PDP and it has one member each in upper House from the Maharaja family the passage of the Bill will not be a simple task for it.
Sources said government can pass the Bill within minutes provided the Pandits agree to keep the temples and shrines under Dharmarth Trust and individual trusts away from the purview of the Bill. However Pandits are opposed to it, sources added.
Under these circumstances it is very difficult for the Government top passage the Bill in the same form in which Pandits are demanding.
