3 soldiers killed after militants attack army convoy at Pampore | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 17: At least three army personnel were killed while as two others were injured in a militant attack at Pampore on Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The attack took place on a convoy that was passing through the area with the militants managing to escape. Reports said that in the afternoon at least two militants riding a bicycle attacked a convoy of army in the Kadlabal chowk of Pampore area. The militants fired indiscriminately on one of the vehicles and the same resulted in fatal casualties to three army soldiers while as two others were injured. The militant attack took the army personnel by surprise and it took some time for them to retaliate. The militants after carrying out the attack fled from the scene while riding the motorcycle. One of the militants stumbled while escaping from the scene. The firing incident led to chaos in the area and people ran here and there for safety. Reports said that the army personnel came to know about the death of their colleagues only when they reached the Badami Bagh cantonment and parked their vehicles there in the convoy ground. It was later on confirmed by army officials that while soldiers have been killed two others were injured. The convoy was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu when it came under the militant attack. Immediately after the firing incident army personnel cordoned off some of the localities in the Pampore area and launched a manhunt to arrest the militants who carried out the attack. The searches were going by the time this report was filed. However, no arrests have been made so far. It has been learnt that the army vehicle that was fired at straightway drove to the Base Hospital at Badami Bagh where the three army men succumbed to injuries. The two soldiers who have been injured in the attack are receiving the treatment at 92 Base Hospital. The identification of the army men killed has not been ascertained as yet. Reports said that the attack took place in the afternoon when militants came on the motorcycle and fired indiscriminately on the convoy leaving three soldiers dead and two others injured. Soon after the attack the militants fled from the spot, but a massive search operation was underway. It was the second attack in Pampore this year. Today's attack comes just days after two militants were killed in two separate encounters in the valley. Reports said that stone pelting incidents took place immediately after the militant attack in some of the localities of the Pampore. Groups of youth clashed with police and security forces at some places lying close to Srinagar-Jammu national highway. The clashes were going on when last reports came in. Mehbooba Mufti has condemned the killing of three army personnel in a militant attack in Pampore town today. The Chief Minister said violence has never helped in the resolution of issues, but only compounded the human miseries. She has also expressed her sympathies with the families of slain soldiers. |
