Will Separatists-Centre talks resolve Kashmir issue ? No | | | Behind the veil
Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: Former Minister Yashwant Sinha has claimed that majority of separatists in Kashmir were for talks with the Government of India.Talks for the Kashmir issue or for seeking pension. Talks cannot be for seeking pension because each separatist leader is a man or woman of wealth hence no need for pension. Actually the Hurriyat leaders want to discuss the Kashmir issue.was there any progress when for several years they had series of meetings with the powers that be in New Delhi? There was no progress till eight years ago. And a senior Hurriyat leader,Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat is pessimistic about the success of talks because Pakistan is a main stakeholder.Yes let India and Pakistan hold parleys and Kashmiri separatists could be involved later because "we are also a party to the dispute." Bhat believes that even grant of internal autonomy cannot resolve the problem be cause Pakistan should first of all okay it. It will be a useless thing if separatists and New Delhi remain engaged in a dialogue. The only benefit is that the separatists may be exposes on the ground that it too has started wooing the centre. The biggest gain would be that during this engagement peace was guaranteed in Kashmir because once these trigger violence talks may break down. If New Delhi wants peace in Kashmir it may reopen the channels of dialogue with separatists.Nothing more can be expected from these talks.once separatists agree to hold talks Pakistan and its agencies may incite other separatists to resort to violence which could prove a swan song for the talks. On its face Pakistan will never encourage a meaningful dialogue between Government of India and the separatists. Before talks were suspended eight years ago the hardliners among the separatists hardly joined moderates in the process of dialogue. It is not yet clear whether the hardlners including Syed Ali shah Geelani had tol Sinha that he was for talks with New Delhi. Even if Geelani joins the moderates in the dialogue process Kashmir issue cannot be resolve d without Pakistan's nod.And talks with inflexible Pakistan is a matter of waste of time because both India and Pakistan are not prepared to alter their stated position. |
