Muhammad Mukaram Srinagar: Dec: 17: In a significant development, two officials suspected to be involved in embezzlement of funds in the State Institute of Education Kashmir (SIEK) have been suspended. A statistics lecturer, and another employee have been placed under suspension following the embezzlement of funds in the SIEK. The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) had set up an inquiry committee to investigate into the misuse of funds. Besides recommending suspension of the duo, the committee has also recommended launching a probe against the former principal of SIEK. Notably, one of the accused was earlier transferred from SIE Srinagar to Boys Higher Secondary School in Ichgam of Budgam district after the DSEK had received complaints of misappropriation of funds against him. However, later he managed to get transferred back to Srinagar. According to sources, the DSEK was forced by the babus to transfer one of the accused employees to Girls Higher Secondary School Amira Kadal, Srinagar from Budgam against vacant post of a stenographer. However, in 2014, when the floods devastated Kashmir, both he accused employees were found to have misused funds to the tune of Rs 19,47,558 for holding eighth standard Term-2 annual examination, as mentioned in official records. However, the exams were never held due to massive deluge. In the financial year 2014-2015, the accused was also allegedly involved in the fraud involving Rs 17,00,356 for establishment of UNICEF secretariat and workshops under the UNICEF project. It was found that the funds had been used to renovate a room of SIEK building in Bemina area of Srinagar. The DSEK has started an inquiry into the alleged fund misappropriation. A three-member committee set up to look into the irregularities includes principal SIE Srinagar, chief accounts officer DSEK and Chief Education Officer Ganderbal.
