PDP MLA to regain ministry soon, courtesy Raida Walas | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 17: An MLA from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, who was not retained in the Cabinet led by Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti is all set to regain the berth in the coming days. Sources said the MLA was being rewarded for having managed to "counsel his army of raida walas" operating in the city center area to resume their work during the previous weeks of hartal, something which helped the government overcome protest calendars in restive Kashmir. Sources in the PDP said this MLA flanked by another party leader, who lost a Srinagar constituency seat in the previous Assembly elections, managed to persuade the pavement vendors to resume their activities in the commercial areas of the summer capital. Interestingly both the PDP leaders happen to be allegedly moneyed. Sources said this MLA ahead of the unrest had facilitated prime government land for pavement vendors who swore alliance to PDP. But, officials said during the unrest these Raida walas were going by Hurriyat dictations. "First, MLA got them kicked out of the government land they were allotted in Lal Chowk. But as these vendors declined to accept his offer of resuming business, he finally persuaded them through a financial package which he managed virtually out of his own pocket," said a close aide of the MLA. Sources said the PDP leadership has taken MLA's "successful counseling of raida walas out of his own financial resources" as a historic achievement, which will be long remembered in the history of Kashmir. Sources said the MLA has assured that raida walas that would again be provided same prized land in Lal Chowk provided they "prove their loyalty to the PDP in the testing times." But the MLA's game plan is actually proving costly for restoration of normal business in the Central Business District of Srinagar -spanning mainly in the Dalgate-Lal Chowk-Batamaloo stretch. The MLA has given unbridled powers to the pavement vendors to run their business virtually anywhere thereby causing major hindrance in flow of traffic. Sources said the concerned police stations have been directed to "refrain from interference in the operations of the pavement vendors." A traffic police official told Early Times that traffic jams last for hours together only because of the presence of the pavement vendors. "We have been asked not to dare touch any such raida wala as they happen to be "apna aadmi of the Neta Ji," the traffic police official said. The MLA has already got a major flood channel, which could save Srinagar during floods, land-filled to construct a market for his pavement vendors. "Srinagar is headed for a major chaos as MLA Sahib is exploiting everything to get back chair... It is for the first time in the history of Kashmir illegal pavement vending is helping a lawmaker get ministerial berth," said a senior official in the administration. Despite repeated attempts the MLA could not be contacted. |
