Politician-Civil society nexus grabs millions through discussions on Kashmir; Govt silent | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 27: Some mainstream politicians in Kashmir are hand-in-glove with the so-called civil society groups to grab millions of rupees in the garb of organizing debates and discussions and other similar events on "Kashmir." Sources said over two dozen politicians from various political parties including those in power and opposition are "running this business to make money in league with civil society groups, including NGOs." "There are different groups which are working in league with political parties and organize various indoor and outdoor events for nothing but money," said a source in the government. Sources said each such organisers make income in millions annually and "a good portion of money is shared with their political masters." Sources said apart from managing to get funds from abroad, several business houses in Kashmir, who are close to the political parties offer "donations" for such events. Officials said in the absence of any proper scrutiny from the government, several fake NGOs are also working for this "nexus." "Presently all such activities enjoy a free hand but things may change soon as there are some serious inputs," said a senior official. He said in the absence of proper audit of the accounts of such groups, the money is grabbed by a few people. "The money is coming from various channels but in the absence of proper audit of the income, it is swindled and there's no accountability," the official said. Sources said over the years organisers of these programs have "mastered in their business." "The rule is simple, the organizers ensure inviting two -three prominent persons including politicians and government functionaries as special guests and pay them honorarium money for attending the event so that more and more people come forward to attend the event," said a source. Sources said in the last three to four years, a group of influential politicians and their contacts in civil society have huge "unaccounted" income out of such deals. Early Times will be coming up with further detailed news reports on the issue. |
