Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Sept 25: Two militants were killed in an encounter that erupted between militants and security forces in Nowpora Tujjer Shareef area some seven kilometers away from the main township of Sopore in this north Kashmir district. A senior police official said that, on Monday late evening, a joint team of security forces including army, police and CRPF launched searches in Nowpora adjacent to Tujjer Shareef area, following reports of presence of militants in the area. "The operation was put on hold for night, and by the time the whole area was cordoned off, so that militants could not escape from the area", the police official said. The official said that today during the searches, hiding militants fired upon the search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing gun battle, two militants were killed. The identity of the killed militants was not immediately ascertained, the official said. He said that some arms, ammunition and incriminating material have been recovered from the site of encounter. Police have registered a case in this regard and the investigation has been initiated in the instant matter. However sources told Early Times that the authorities had closed all educational institutions in Sopore division today, while as mobile internet services were suspended in Sopore town after a gunfight broke out between security forces and militants in Nowpora village of Tujjar area. They said that the killed militants are believed to be of JeM, but the identity of slain militants was not ascertained by the police yet. Pertinently army on Monday claimed that they have killed five militants in the last two days, after they foiled infiltration bid in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district. |
