Re-emergence of militancy in Srinagar poses tough challenge to police, other security agencies | With municipal elections round the corner security beefed up across summer capital | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 3: With the first phase of municipal elections just few days' away security has been beefed up across the Srinagar city with personnel of Jammu & Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) maintaining a strict vigil in the summer capital of the state. Police has established check points and nakas at many points in the city and the passersby are being checked although randomly. Vigil is being maintained on the people who cross such check points and nakas with special focus being laid on the movement of motorcycles, scooters and scooties. Nakas and check points have been set up at places like Sanat Nagar, Baghat, Lal Mandi, Parimpora, Tengpora, Munawarabad, Dalgate, Pantha Chowk, Lasjan and some other strategic places in the Srinagar city. All the vehicles entering and leaving Srinagar district are being closely monitored. Sources said that since the Srinagar district witnessed some militancy related incidents in the recent past the security agencies are not taking any chance with regards to overall security scenario in the city and nearby areas. They said that the administration wants to have hassle free civic polls in the valley. "After a huge lull militants have been knocking at the doors of Srinagar district and its peripheries for the past few months now. This has thrown a challenge for the police and CRPF operating in the summer capital of the state. The security agencies are concerned with the re-emergence of militant activities in Srinagar and want to put an end to the same," said sources. Sources said that areas like Nowgam, Lasjan, Sempora, Ahmad Nagar and Tengpora are being watched with caution by the security agencies since they act as fringe areas and also act as entry point to districts like Pulwama, Budgam and Shopian. They said that security agencies want to choke the movement of militants to Srinagar and for the same extra vigil is being maintained on areas falling in peripheries. "The recent incident in which a special police officer (SPO) of a sitting legislator decamped with seven rifles and a pistol from Jawahar Nagar area in Srinagar has thrown security agencies into a tizzy. Since the SPO joined the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, the people at helm do not want that any misadventure takes place more so with elections round the corner," said sources. Sources said that since militants have issued threats to people willing to contest and vote in civic polls the security agencies want to provide a safe and secure environment especially in Srinagar since it has always remained in focus. Any untoward incident in Srinagar catches attention of one and all and as such no chance whatsoever is being taken on security front. In the meantime, police today recovered three magazines and some other incriminating material from a house during a search operation in a village in Central Kashmir's Budgam district. "Continuing with its investigation of a sensitive case registered at Budgam, search warrant was obtained from a competent court and accordingly a house was searched in Daulatpora village in District Budgam," said a police spokesman. The police spokesman said that incriminating material including three magazines of AK 47, one pouch and other articles recovered during the search have been duly processed for judicial endorsement. Investigation of the case is under progress. |
