Cop killings, arms loot in Shopian put police in tight spot | New Delhi-Raj Bhawan meeting likely soon | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 3: With no let up in killing of cops and snatching of weapons in Shopian, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have come under tight spot for their failure to bring situation under control in the south Kashmir district. Sources said New Delhi is shocked to know that in the last four odd months, at least nine cops have been killed by militants and around dozen weapons were snatched whereas militancy continues to be on rise in the district. Official sources said the Union Home Ministry has been keenly tracking the developments that are taking place in the district which is also famous for apples. It was reliably learnt that the Union Home Ministry will be picking up the issue of situation in Shopian with K Vijay Kumar who is Advisor Governor SP Malik and DGP Dilbagh Singh in the coming days to decide future course of action. Amid rise of militancy, the role of local police continues to be under scanner. What has come as a shocker is that even the main police station in the district has been a repeated target of the militants, something which hints at alleged failure on the part of the department. In the latest on September 30, a cop on duty at the main gate of the Shopian police station was killed by militants who managed to escape with his weapon. Source said the militant movement in some villages is "so dominant that no SHO moves around in a single armored vehicle alone but that they take a convoy along to avoid any offensive from the militants." "We have stopped moving along in a single Gypsy as the villages that fall in our area are highly vulnerable. We move in convoys alone," said a policeman posted there, on the condition of anonymity. Interestingly though the situation in the district was under control even after the killing of Hizbul Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani in 2016, it suddenly worsened never to come under control since. Earlier this year in January, the state government was asked to "introspect on poor policing" in Shopian, when the then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had shot a letter to the Defence Minister. Whereas "expressing anguish" over the killing of two civilians in Army firing on January 27, Mehbooba had shot a letter to the Defense Minister, security analysts had raised questions over the state of policing in the district as "New Delhi wanted the state government to introspect as to what is wrong in Shopian." Subsequently, in the spring of 2018, an "experienced hand" was transferred to the district. Officials said no cop killings took place for another four months till he was transferred as he was preparing to proceed on a central deputation. The Jammu and Kashmir Police, on the other hand, have been pleading that in the last few years Shopian witnessed record number of CASOs. "Killings are taking place but the district has witnessed record number of CASOs and that is an achievement in itself and situation will soon be under control once the upcoming polls are over," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. |
