Rohingya influx in Jammu continues unabated | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 3: The people of Jammu had been demanding deportation of Rohingyas since month, saying their presence in the City of Temples constituted a grave threat to national security and the demography of the region. They held several protest demonstrations in Jammu during the period. The brewing anger in Jammu against Rohingyas settled near Army camps, in Sunjuwan-Narwal-Bathindi area and near Army camp at Nagrota and within the city's such localities as Talab Tillo had its impact on the Union Government. It was under the pressure of the Union Home Ministry that the Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition government set up a Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by a senior BJP minister to collect all details on the Rohingya intruders and recommend steps aimed at deporting them. The committee met only once and did nothing. The failure of the state government to do the needful only added to the anger of the people of Jammu. In the meantime, the Mehbooba Mufti government fell because the BJP withdrew support to her government on June 19. The Mehbooba Mufti government was the biggest obstacle in the way of the Rohingyas' deportation. In fact, Mehbooba Mufti had declared on the floor of the assembly that the "deportation of Rohingyas will not be appropriate". It was expected that the fall of the Mehbooba Mufti government would lead to the deportation of the Rohingyas, but it didn't happen. On the contrary, the BJP in its executive committee meeting at Akhnoor last month adopted a dangerous resolution that said: "Rohingyas should be kept at one place as long as they were not deported". In a way, the BJP facilitated their stay in Jammu much to the chagrin of the people of Jammu. Now, there are reports emanating from the Narwal-Sunjuwan-Bathindi area that "the Rohingya influx to Jammu has not stopped" and that "8 to 10 Rohingyas are coming to Jammu by trains everyday and they are being helped by certain elements in these areas". Only on Monday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked the state governments to identify all the Rohingyas and send the whole information to his ministry so that they could be deported. It's strange that, on the one hand, the Union Government is asking the state governments to identify them and, on the other, more and more Rohingyas are coming to Jammu. As per official estimate, the total number of Rohingyas living in Jammu is about 30,000. But, according to unofficial figures, their number is "about one lakh". In the meantime, the Narendra Modi government is all set to deport seven Rohingyas from Assam and the UN has opposed the Indian move. |
