SHRC seeks report from MC Chadoora | Contamination of Doodh Ganga | | Early Times Report budgam, July 31: As solid and liquid waste continues to enter into Doodh Ganga river around Chadoora town in Budgam, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought a report from Municipal Committee Chadoora (MC Chadoora) in this direction. Sources say that SHRC might prosecute the municipality for failing to perform its duty especially to implement solid waste management rules 2016 Taking cognizance of a complaint SHRC issued notice to MC Chadoora seeking a detailed report on dumping of solid and liquid waste in the river. The complainant has alleged that Government is doing nothing to stop illegal entry of liquid waste in the Doodh Ganga whose water is supplied to 10 lakh population in Srinagar uptown Inspite of assurance from Government around 9 months back, the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) is yet to be installed in Chadoora town with the result all the fecal matter, sewerage and liquid waste coming out of commercial and residential areas continues to find its way into the Doodh Ganga river. The water of the same river is lifted by Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) and supplied to a huge population around Srinagar's uptown area. Advisor to Governor Khurshid Ahmad Ganai in October last year during a public durbar at Budgam had promised to set up an STP and scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant in Chadoora town. "Almost 9 months have passed not even a single meeting has been held to discuss this problem and people around Srinagar's civil lines area and some parts of Chadoora continue to suffer as unhygienic water lifted from Doodh Ganga and then supplied to 10 lakh population" said Nazir Ahmad a resident of Chadoora As reported already Chadoora town is facing a serious problem vis a vis management of solid and liquid waste. The Municipal Committee Chadoora has not even been able to identify land for creating a scientific landfill site and locals of Chadoora allege that large amount of municipal solid waste also finds its entry into Doodh Ganga. Sources have revealed that more than 300 lavatories and household sewerage from hundreds of houses and business units enters into the Doodh Ganga from Surasyar area to water filtration plant Kralpora. Most of the solid and liquid waste enters into the water of Doodh Ganga around Chadoora town where hundreds of shops, clinics and other commercial units have been set up on the banks of Doodh Ganga. The illegal construction on main road especially on banks of Doodh Ganga is the main cause of frequent traffic jam in the town as the whole township has been chocked and congested from all the sides. Locals allege that banks of Doodh Ganga nallah have been encroached at various places and authorities at the helm of affairs are mute spectators. It is also alleged that Municipal Committee Chadoora has illegally constructed its own office and town hall on the banks of Doodh Ganga few years back. |
