India's pull out from RCEP | | Omkar Dattatray | 11/15/2019 11:19:24 PM |
| India has done right by pulling itself out from Regional comprehensive Economic Partnership. The decision is in accordance with our foreign policy and is in our interest. Congress opposed the agreement and government's not joining the RCEP is claimed as its victory by the congress. Whatever it is the pullout has given a strong message to China that India should not be taken for granted. It has in fact countered China. Earlier India put forward reasonable proposals for RCEP agreement. Prime minister said that India has put forward reasonable proposals in clear manner and is engaged in talks with sincerity for the free trade deal. When India's concerns were not addressed India finally choose not to be part of the RCEP agreement as it opted out of the proposed deal in the overall interests of the country. It is an open secret that US wants to take India under its ambit to counter the growing influence of China and thus likes to checkmate it. World wants that trade war between the America and China to stop for the interest of the free trade and world peace. But the super powers do not adhere to the world appeals for end to trade war which has the potential of disturbing world peace. India has remained independent and has some years before joined Shanghi Coperation Organisation (SCO). India however does not like to come under the embrace of America and by joining SCO India has made it clear that it wants to remain independent in the international matters and it also wants to safeguard its strategic interests. There is no denying the fact that under the pressure of the congress's opposition NDA government has said no to RCEP at the eleventh hour and has shown magnanimity. By not signing the RCEP deal it has not bartered the interests of the farmers, small and medium businessmen and others and it was done as the farmers protested the singing of the agreement of RCEP. It is learnt that the Modi government did not sign the agreement under pressure of the farmers otherwise government was at the brink of bartering India's interests before foreign companies and countries. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said that BJP was about to sign the RCEP agreement but backed out at last due to the strong protest of the farmers who did not like to forsake their benefits at the altar of foreign countries. According to Randeep Surajewala, "rampant unemployment, sinking economy and deep agrarian crisis emanating from utter mismanagement of economy by BJP government'' and signing of the proposed agreement of RCEP would have been catastrophic. All that one can say in this regard is that better sense prevailed on the government and they said no to RCEP. No assurance was given by the countries who are the members of RCEP about the safeguards on market access for service and information technology industry. In fact the India's stand on RCEP was the growing stature of India's influence and commitment to its interests. The Indians stand and decision of not signing the RCEP deal will help the farmers, small and medium enterprises. India's external affairs minister said that under the current circumstances it was not possible to sign the RCEP deal and in doing so BJP has kept national interest of the country uppermost. But then Piyush Goyal said that the signing of the deal can be considered if RCEP countries will address India's concerns and interests and the options are not closed for ever. Thus India countered China and made it clear that it is independent so for as its interests and concerns are concerned. It follows that India cannot be cowed down even by the super powers and this is a matter of satisfaction for all of us. |
