Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 24: As the government has enforced lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent the COVID-19 threat turning into a full blown crisis, people in Kashmir have started to realize the futility of the strikes which they observed at the behest of separatists during the past years.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "The hartal calendars, which the people in Kashmir followed or were forcibly made to follow have broken the back of Kashmir's economy."
He said, "In 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2016 Kashmiris were made to believe by the separatists that them going on strike and indulging in stone-pelting will fetch them Azadi. These separatists ensured that whoever opposes their hartal call and their style of politics is taken to the task."
The analyst said that soon after the Government of India (GoI) announced its decision to revoke J&K's special status and bifurcated it into two union territories on August 5, 2019, in absence of separatists Pakistan took the charge directly. "The gun wielding terrorists enforced the shutdown in Kashmir for four months and the ones who defied their diktats were either shot dead or their business establishments were set ablaze," he added.
An observer said, "In November last year Kashmiris broke the shackles and resumed their daily chores without caring for the grenades which were being hurled in the crowded markets by the Pakistan sponsored terrorists. These terrorists resorted to the killings of non-local labourers, businessmen and truck drivers to prevent the Kashmiri apple from going to other places across the country."
He said that Kashmir's economy has suffered immensely during the so-called 'Azadi' illusion. "The breaking out of COVID-19 pandemic will further cripple the economy of Kashmir. Lockdown can continue till the threat prevails and even after the lockdown ends there is no guarantee about tourists returning to Kashmir as travel restrictions and other advisories will follow," he added.
Another analyst said, "People of Kashmir should realize that how separatists and Pakistan have used them. They have been pushed to the brink and are at the verge of turning paupers. Supporters of stone-pelters, terrorists and the separatists need to sit and think about the devastation they have caused by supporting these elements."
He said, "The COVID-19 threat should serve as an eye-opener for the hate mongers, who have pushed Kashmir and its people to brink during all these years."
