Unemployment rate on rise
6/10/2021 12:05:48 AM

The unemployment rate has increased
in Jammu and Kashmir during the past
one year, NITI Aayog's latest index of States and Union Territories (UTs) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has revealed.
Though there has been a marginal increase in the unemployment rate i.e. from 5.4% to 5.6% but it's an indicator that still a lot needs to be done to address the issue of unemployment.
Soon after the transition of erstwhile J&K state into a union territory on August 5, 2019, the government had announced that a special package will be announced for the youth and the vacancies that have been lying vacant for a long time will be filled on fast track basis. The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC), premiere recruitment agency of the UT, during the past one and half year has announced many posts but the pace of recruitment process has been slow.
Many qualified youth are the verge of crossing the overage limit and are waiting for the government to advertise the posts.
Recently, dental surgeons staged a protest in Jammu to highlight their plight. The J&K government has not announced any posts of dental surgeons for the past 10-years. Similarly there are many qualified professionals who have been waiting for the jobs for the past many years.
The administration cannot brush aside the NITI Aayog Index by claiming that there has been only a marginal increase in the unemployment rate. The fact is that the rate has increased and this factor cannot be ignored. After J&K's transition into a union territory it should have declined but it has not happened. Unemployed youth are hoping that the present dispensation would go beyond the announcements and a serious process would be launched to absorb them so that they can plan their lives and careers.
The jobs that were promised need to be advertised so that youth have something to look forward to. Unemployment in J&K has always been a major cause of concern for the past many decades. Erstwhile political regimes couldn't do much to address this burning issue as the former rulers cited one or other reason for them being unable to create employment avenues. Now, people are hoping that no excuses will be given and the vacant posts will be filled and new job opportunities will be created so that youth don't remain uncertain about their future.
