BARAMULLA, July 3: Seven councilors out of 13 have moved a vote of no confidence against President and Vice President MC Kupwara under Municipal Act 2000, while as NC councilor Masrat Kar has been elected as new chairperson of MC Sopore.
The councilors who have moved a vote of no confidence against the acting president Riyaz Ahmad Mir and VP Ghulm Mohi-ud Din of MC Kupwara include Iqbal Shah, Councilor of Ward no 5, Pusha Begum Councilor ward 4, Bashir Ahmad Khan councilor ward no 12, Tariq Ahmad Malik councilor, Posha Begum councilor ward no 7, Mohammad Syed Masoodi councilor of ward no 2 and Abdul Ahad Sheikh councilor ward no 6 of Municipal Council (MC) Kupwara.
“We the councilors of the Municipal Council Kupwara move this application on the basis that the councilors have lost confidence over current President of Municipal Council Kupwara due to which the vote of no confidence motion be hereby entertained,” reads an application that is in possession of Early Times.
The application further reads, ‘therefore it is as such requested that the concerned President may kindly be informed and the election for the selection of new President may kindly be scheduled at an earliest.” The application was copied to Principal Secretary HULB, DC Kupwara and DULBK for information.
Meanwhile, it is learnt from reliable sources that the President MC Kupwara has said that he vacated his chair a few days ago only as he has some domestic issues due to which he cannot continue to hold his work as Chairman/President of MC Kupwara.
“I was not having such resources that I could have utilized on the developmental works so I tendered my resignation to the concerned authorities”, sources while quoting Riyaz as having said.
Sources also said that maximum councilors have unanimously decided not to work under the president and vice president as they have failed in their duties, adding they don’t have any trust over the functioning and work culture of these two functionaries.
Meanwhile Masarat Kar, a National Conference councilor was elected as chairperson of the Municipal Council Sopore on Saturday by a margin of six votes against her nearest rival of the People’s Democratic Party councilor. Masarat defeated her opponent of PDP, Irfan Ali by a margin of six votes. Masarat while thanking the councilors for electing her said that she will try to work for the betterment and development of Sopore town.
Notably, the post of chairperson MC council Sopore fell vacant after the majority of the councilors moved a no-confidence motion against the former chairperson, in January this year. The election for 13 vacant wards of MC Sopore was held in December, 2020, in which MC bagged 10 seats while 2 were won by independent candidates and a seat was won by a PDP candidate.
It is pertinent to mention that two councilors Riyaz Ahmad Pir and Shamsu-ud Din Pir and PSO of another councilor were killed in a militant attack this year in March during a meeting of councilors at Sopore.
