Tourists raise issues of "Wular Lake" for its encroachment, poor road connectivity
7/3/2021 11:55:16 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 3: "Wular" one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes which spreads in a total area of 200 square km covering almost 24 km in length and 10 km breadth is situated in north Kashmir, losing its grandeur. On spot visit reveals that the lake has been silted up, encroached upon from all sides by massive plantation of trees and extension of agriculture fields as locals have converted lake into marshy land. The ever increasing population around the "Wular Lake" and lenient view of the local administration has posed a threat to our heritage. Poor road connectivity, swamp and foul smell near "Wular" in fact have degradation its water quality although it is considered as Asia's one of the largest fresh water lake. A troop of tourists when reached at one of its shore after hectic efforts found that due to the militancy or other reasons encroachers have grabbed land around its banks/ Shores. Filth and garbage was dumped around its beds. They observed that till date "Wular" has lost enough but now desperately restoration is needed to save by demarcating the area near it for the human intervention. They appealed to the Government of Jammu & Kashmir UT to come forward to deal with iron hands with the encroachers near the lake. They also demanded that to maintain the sanctity of our heritage "Wular" government must improve the areas near it as a tourist resort by providing good road connectivity, hotels, restaurants etc. so that tourists can enjoy the beauties of this prestigious lake.
