Jammu, July 3: To explore the positive and negative environmental impacts of covid-19 pandemic, GDC Vijaypur organized online interactive workshop on “Environmental effects of Covid-19 Pandemic and potential strategies of Sustainability” on this “International Plastic bag free day”. Prof Poonam Kundan (convener, Ecoclub) in her welcome address stressed upon various strategies of environmental stability. She explained various short term and long term impacts of Covid-19 pandemic on the Environment. The overall proceeding of the workshop was categorized into two sessions. In the first session, students of the college shared their views through PowerPoint presentations, oral presentations and by reciting poems on the various impacts of Covid-19 Pandemic on Environment. One of the students beautifully explained the various positive impacts on our rivers and streams, significant improvement in air quality in different cities across the world, reduction in GHGs emission, reduction in noise pollution and pressure on the tourist destination which may assist with the restoration of the ecological ecosystem while others explained negative impacts due to the increase of medical waste, haphazard use and disposal of disinfectants, mask, gloves and burden of untreated waste which is continuously endangering the environment. In the second session of the workshop, various students showcased their handmade bags to discourage the use of plastic bags. Some of the students prepared posters to aware masses regarding ill effects of plastic bags and plastic pollution. The Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Sudan, shared her views and suggested possible ways to achieve long-term environmental benefit, as proper implementation of the proposed strategies might be helpful for the global environmental sustainability.
