Tony urges ECI to reserve two seats in assembly for Sikh community
7/4/2021 12:20:47 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 3: District Development Council (DDC) Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reserve two seats for Sikh community in the Jammu and Kashmir’s legislative body so that the community not only gets due representation in the affairs of this Union Territory but also an opportunity to raise the voice of Sikhs in the temple of democracy.
In a statement issued to media here today, Tony said that there is dire need to immediately rectify the mistakes rather errors and omissions of the past and this is the appropriate moment when the earlier omissions or wrongs can be corrected through the duly approved and recognized process in a democratic set up for which India is known across the globe.
The District Development Council Member asserted that refugees were settled on the borders right from Poonch to Kathua in 1947, 1965 and 1971 respectively and majority of them are belonging to the Sikh community. He said that while most of the rights of this section of the people got restored with the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A after decades of discrimination now it is time to provide these refugees the right to say in the affairs of governance and this can be best assured only by reserving at least one each seat in the Legislative Assembly for Jammu and Kashmir regions for the Sikh community.
Reiterating the demand, Tony urged the Election Commission of India to reserve one seat for Sikh community in the significant legislative body which would be the ultimate justice with the refugee as well as the Sikh community.
He further expressed the hope that their demand would be definitely taken care of in the revival and rejuvenation of the democratic process of this newly formed Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He also asked all parties to raise the Sikhs reservation issue before the ECI if these parties want votes from Sikh community.
