Industries of Kathua spreading pollution unabated | | | Early Times Report Kathua, Mar 6: Turning deaf years towards the increasing environmental pollution, more than two dozen red and orange category industrial units have been spreading pollution in atmosphere for the last many years under the nose of district administration Kathua. Despite repeated appraisal to concerned quarters coupled by launching of movement by the residents of Kathua about pollution menace in Hatli Morh industrial area but instead of some relief in pollution level same has increased. It seems that there is hidden nexus between District Administration Kathua and industrial unit owners which has given unbridled powers to these owners to violate all laws with impunity. Expressing anguish over silence of district administration and Pollution Control Board authorities, Sunil Kumar, a resident of Hatli Morh said that according to rules there should be three rows of broad leaves trees outside every cement factory, but in brazen violation of the same, there was not even a single factory where such arrangement has been made by the industry unit owner. Alleging a hidden nexus between authorities and industry unit owners, Rakesh Kumar said that there were strict directions from PCB to install various safety equipments to restrict the degree of pollutants in the dust and smoke. "Majority of unit owners have installed such equipments but they occasionally used the same. Whenever, someone make a complaint with higher officials and when some team conducts inspection of these units, the local employees of PCB informed these owners and they switch on the equipments on the day of inspection", he alleged, adding that they rarely used the same. He further said that use of these safety equipments increased the power consumption and so the power bill. "These factory owners gives a huge amount of bribe to PCB officials and violates the norms", he said. |
