SRTC operates 29 buses in Srinagar, none in Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 6: JK SRTC state road transport corporation (JKSRTC) established in 1950 had a glorious past as it was capable of running more than 1600 vehicles, extending satisfactory services from cargo to city services. During the period of turmoil.. SRTC on the one hand lost 135 vehicles in the series of militancy related incidents and on the other hand suffered heavy losses while performing service to the public in general and to the government in particular. This has resulted in persistent decline in revenue and now corporation is reeling under heavy losses. As per economic survey of JK reason for decline in earning potential and increase in costs of over aged fleet not timely replaced, growth of private sector transporters etc. .Despite this it provides 29 buses plying on the roads of Srinagar city and provides local transport facility. However, the corporation has no bus for Jammu. Earlier during 1990 Jammu city used to have city bus service plying from Parade to Satwari, Gandhinagar and other areas Rakesh Gupta.a private employee said that no doubt private transport has taken a front seat in providing service in Jammu but why SRTC stopped their services in Jammu when it continues in Srinagar. This is discrimination against Jammu. Sunita Bangotra, a teacher by profession reminded of those days when city service was provided by SRTC in Jammu. She further said that today as a commuter we have large presence of private transport in Jammu which caters to lakhs of people but they also charge at their will If the corporation is in losses then how it has one line for Srinagar and other for Jammu. There should be equal treatment meted out with these two regions.. |
