NC-Cong alliance hinges on Valley ticket to Cong
3/6/2014 11:21:27 PM

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 6: NC-Congress is unlikely to continue as Congress has demanded at least one Parliamentary constituency in the Valley. NC has already announced three candidates from Kashmir, which the Congress said was a decision taken without consulting it.
"The coalition hangs on equal share of Parliamentary seats. For Congress the seat in Valley is very important," said a senior Congress leader.
NC according to sources is unlikely to relent and this could further strain the relations between two coalition partners.
The NC on the other hand has proposed Cong to contest from the Ladakh seat. However, the Cong had countered this move by stating that since the party is already on a strong wicket in the Ladakh region, NC had no other choice but to propose it to the Congress.
"We have won Kargil Hill Development Council by defeating NC and are already ruling Leh Hill Development Council. So it's pretty clear that Cong is sole contender in this region and NC has lost all the footing it had there especially in Kargil, so the NC is not doing any charity," said he.
The reason for Cong insisting on a seat from the Valley is on two accounts. First is party feels it had done enough ground work in the last five years and the public mood is in its favour, so there is chance of party putting up good show there.
Another reason, the Congress feels, is that the number of voters garnered by the Congress in the Valley in Parliamentary elections will show the real strength of the party on ground there and it would help it in the forthcoming Assembly election.
"Lok Sabha polls are important for us on many accounts especially to test our strength in the Valley and it can be knwon if contest Parliamentary election from there and for it NC has to give one seat to us," said the Congress leader.
According to party sources, during recent standoff between two parties over creation of new units, when Omar had threatened to resign, one of the conditions put by the Congress to the demand of Omar was that apart from 73rd Amendment implementation, NC would give one seat from Valley to the Congress, to which NC had agreed on.
