After Ganderbal, NC faces revolt in Zadibal | Close aide of sitting MLA thrashes NC block treasurer, SPOs beat Halqa President | | Fazal Khan SRINAGAR, Sept 3: After Ganderbal, ruling National Conference is facing rebellion at Zadibal in old city here as the NC workers and the locals are opposing the mandate to the sitting NC MLA Peer Afaq. Sources told Early Times that top NC leaders, including Ali Muhammad Sagar, Mian Altaf, Nasir Aslam Wani and others visited the Zadibal area on Tuesday to assess the ground situation and take the final decision about whom to give mandate from the area. "Situation took an ugly turn when hundreds of NC supporters assembled outside the building, where NC leaders had gathered to deliberate over the issue. The NC supporters raised slogans against the sitting MLA Peer Afaq and demanded he should not be given the mandate," sources said. The NC block treasurer Naziruddin Baba while talking to Early Times said, "The incumbent MLA (Peer Afaq) had not informed the party workers that top NC leaders are visiting the area. After we came to know about their visit I along with other workers reached the venue and informed the party leaders about us being kept in dark." Baba alleged that one of the business partners and close aide of incumbent MLA manhandled him. "Sagar Sahib resented the move and termed it as Nangi Gundgardi," Baba added. He claimed that Personal Security Officers of the incumbent MLA thrashed the Halqa President of the party Fayaz Ahmed Dar, when he and other workers were raising slogans against the MLA Zadibal. Baba claimed that he along with other NC workers during the past few months have tried to meet the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on many occasions but till date they have not succeeded. "We went to Omar sahib's residence on many occasions but he refused to meet us and we were sent back from the gate," he added. Baba claimed that he has been affiliated with NC since 1984 and has held important positions in the party. "I along with other workers braved militant threats but didn't change our loyalties. We were hurt when Omar sahib refused to meet us. It's unfortunate that party leadership is treating the grass root workers shabbily," he added. Baba asserted that if party gives mandate to Peer Afaq then "NC would taste defeat in Zadibal constituency." "If party repeats Peer Afaq we the real workers of NC will be left with no other choice other than choosing a candidate and asking him to contest as independent," he added. Asked would he quit NC and contest as independent if Peer Afaq gets the NC ticket, he said, "It's very much possible. We cannot support a person who has no footing in the area." "People of the area are fed up of the local MLA and if party chooses him we cannot go with it as we have to face our people," Baba added. He alleged that since the day he has raised the banner of revolt he has been receiving "life threats." "I am planning to meet the Governor sahib in coming days as I want to apprise him about my life being in danger," Baba added. Pertinently, a convention organized by the NC at Beehama Ganderbal on Tuesday had ended up in a fiasco as National Conference workers raised slogans against each other and tried to exchange blows. Chaos and confusion had infuriated the National Conference Provincial President and Chief Minister's close aide NasirAslamWani, who lost his cool and kicked a NC worker. The angry NC workers were demanding mandate for Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar, who has threatened to contest the elections as independent candidate if party denies mandate to him. |
