Modi Government to re-assess flood loses | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 17 : The Central government has decided to have re-work on the estimates of the losses suffered by the people in the September flash floods. The Central government is not convinced with the figures of the Rs 44,000 crores loses estimated by the out going Omar Abdullah government. Omar Abdullah was given a shocker, when he was the CM, by the Central government after it was not convinced by the figure of loses and it was for this reason the amount was not released. The centre had asked the state government to utilise funds of Rs 1,000 given to it under NDRF. The former CM after being shown doors both by the people and the Central government is now again asking the Centre to release the funds, saying that when the State is directly under the Central rule why the funds are not being given, "Instead of the asking the Centre to release funds, Omar should have explained why his government faulted in arriving at the figures and also why the figures were arrived in a haste," said a senior official. The Centre has though said that the funds will not be constrain but they have to be given to the people who have suffered really and it will be credited in their account. The centre has decided to send a team of high officials who will be accompanied by the people who are professionals in assessing the real loses . The team is likely to visit the place affected by the floods and after physical verifications the report would be submitted to the PMO who will then take a call after holding deliberations with the Prime Minister. "Modi has himself visited the State the day floods started. He has shown concern for the people. But he want accountability and proper utilisation of funds. He wants every rupee spend to be accounted. This is some thing which the State government was not accustomed to it. It was in the habit of swindling central assistance on the pretext of disturbance in the State and also weak Central government. The things have changed and people are finding it hard to face the reality," said the official. |
