Massive drive against traffic violators in Baramulla | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari

BARAMULLA, Jan 17: A day after Union Minister of Transport Nitin Gadkari asked the state government to take stern action against traffic violators, Transport Authorities launched a massive drive against violators in Baramulla district of north Kashmir today. Transport authorities launched a massive drive against erring drivers and violators to streamline traffic management in the district. Pertinently the drive comes, after Jan 13 in which nine persons had lost their lives and many other were injured in a deadly road accident at Boose Rengi in Sopore town on Srinagar-Muzzaffarabad National highway. Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Baramulla, Jamsheed Choudhary told Early Times that, " the department is acting tough against traffic violations. 'As this week is being observed as road safety week, we have launched a special drive against traffic violators. So for we have send a notice to more than 24 erring drivers for immediate suspension of their driving licenses and route permits, during our drive it was found that most of the violations occur due to over loading, ARTO said. The ARTO also warned drivers of various vehicles not to use mobile phones while driving and avoid drinking, smoking, overloading, which could lead to accidents. "Drivers must use seat belt while driving and must avoid use of mobile phones. Drivers should drive with a limited speed to avoid road mishaps," he added "We have launched a massive drive against erring drivers and violators. On the first day we fined more than 24 erring drivers and made a fine of Rs 40,000 from them, however official added and said that we have send a notice for suspension of 24 Driving License holders. A local resident of Baramulla said that, "The increase in road accidents is a major concern. Besides acting tough against the violators in town areas, traffic Police and transport authorities should also act seriously against such violations in rural areas also. The driving licenses and other documents like route permits of erring drivers or violators of traffic rules should be cancelled with an immediate effect, local said. A senior officials from traffic department told early times that the department has taken serious note of traffic violations and has started a drive in different areas of Baramulla district. Official said that they have taken cognizance of the violations. "We have been carrying out our activities to put a check on violations. We have been organising programmes with civil society and our senior police officials to aware general public about traffic rules," a senior official said. "It is not confined to traffic week only. We have acted seriously against people who are involved visible offences like overloading, use of mobile phones etc. We are also trying to involve common people to make them aware so that road mishaps are averted," official added. |
