Things assuming alarming proportions in alienated Jammu | Biased attitude | | Rustam Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 17: Developments which have been unfolding in Kashmir since December 23, when the election results were announced, are adding to the anger of the already rather angry people of Jammu province and if the present trend continues, anything can happen in this part of the state. Three developments in Kashmir have not gone down well with the people of Jammu province. One, the opposition in Kashmir to the demand in Jammu for a Hindu Chief Minister from Jammu. There is a growing demand in Jammu that the Chief Minister of the state this time should be from Jammu and the argument advanced is that till date all the Chief Ministers had been from Kashmir, who also belonged to a particular religious sect that controls all the political parties and separatist organizations in the Valley. Yet another argument advanced by the people of Jammu province is that since Jammu is part and parcel of the state and is the second largest province after Ladakh, it, like Kashmir, also deserves the office of the Chief Minister. This demand in Jammu is being opposed tooth and nail by Kashmiris of all shades of opinion, NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamal included. The opposition in Kashmir to the demand in Jammu for a Hindu Chief Minister has caused resentment among the Hindu community to the extent that even liberals have started vouching for the state's division, saying "we cannot work with the Kashmiris". Two, what has further alienated the people of Jammu from Kashmir is the opposition in the Valley to the suggestion that the PDP, the single largest party in the assembly with 28 MLAs, and the BJP, the second largest party in the assembly with 25 seats, should form a coalition government so that the Governor's rule ends and a popularly-elected government is installed in the state, as the people of the state didn't vote for the Governor's rule. All or nearly all, including all the separatists, have joined hands against the suggestion, thus making the task of government formation difficult. The people of Jammu have described this opposition in Kashmir as a "conspiracy" against them. "The State came under the Governor's rule because the vested interests and communal forces joined hands both against the PDP and the BJP," they are saying, and adding that "had the people of Jammu province not voted in the manner they voted, there would have been a government in place by now". "It is to prevent Jammu from becoming part of the government that the vested interests have joined hands in Kashmir," the politically conscious people of Jammu province are also saying. The third development that has further shocked the entire population of Jammu is the bitter opposition in the Valley to the recommendation of the joint parliamentary committee that refugees from West Pakistan be granted permanent residency status and right to vote in the assembly and local bodies' elections. All in Kashmir have described the recommendation as a "conspiracy being hatched by New Delhi and the Sangh Parivar to change the demography of the state". They have been holding demonstrations and organizing seminars on the issue with a view to instigating the Kashmiri people against New Delhi. All these developments have only strengthened those in Jammu who hold the view that the people of Jammu province would not get their due share until and unless the state is divided and Jammu given the status of statehood. The Kashmiri leadership needs to look all these facts in the face and refashion their whole approach if they really wish the state to remain united. Things as they are developing in Jammu clearly suggest that the patience of Jammu is ending and ending very fast. The alienated people of Jammu province have to be conciliated if J&K State is to remain as one political entity. |
