Flood affected people give vent to grievances during Governor's whirlwind tour | Vohra takes administration to task, asks them to improve performance | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 17: Governor Narendra Nath Vohra today undertook a whirlwind tour of the summer capital of the state and visited areas that bore brunt of devastating flood of September 2014. The Governor impressed upon the administration to pull up their socks and improve their performance with regard to providing relief to the flood affected people. In the Rajbagh area of the city scores of flood affected people met the Governor and conveyed their displeasure over the lackadaisical attitude of the administration in providing relief to them. These people said that they are being forced to live in tents and are vulnerable to various vagaries more so during the months of winter. The residents complained that despite many promises they have not been provided pre-fab huts thus pushing them to the wall. Following this Vohra issued on spot directions to Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah for allotment of pre- fabricated structures to flood affected families. He also directed the administration to ensure disbursement of all relief cheques within a week's time positively. At Barzulla, a group of people informed the Governor about the tardy pace of work going on with respect to the strengthening of embankments and plugging of breaches. The people expressed displeasure over the pace of work and said that despite passing of four months no significant progress has been made with respect to strengthening of embankments. Vohra asked Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control department, Javed Jafar to speed up the pace of work so that it is completed soon. At Bemina, the Governor inspected the pre-fabricated shelters constructed for flood victims. He assured of full support to the people in mitigating the grievances of flood affected people. He also undertook a tour of the commercial hub of Lal Chowk. Vohra chaired a high level meeting to review the relief and rehabilitation measures for flood affected people in the Valley. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Rohit Kansal told the meeting that about Rs. 170 crores have been distributed among the flood affected victims as ex-gratia relief for damaged houses and rent on account of accommodation. Kansal said that over 200 temporary structures have been constructed in different districts of the valley besides the administration has facilitated the construction of 600 temporary structures involving different NGOs. It was also given out that roads, bridges, water supply schemes which were extensively damaged during the floods have been restored. The Governor also interacted with the stakeholders of tourism, traders, handloom and transport sectors besides houseboat owners and members of civil society. Directing speedy response to the grievances of members of civil society and other associations Vohra asked Vice Chairman LAWDA and Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation for immediately streamlining the issuance of building permissions for the reconstruction of houses and hotels to the flood affected persons under a single window system. He also asked for the labour rates to be fixed and publicized. Responding to the conduct of school examinations, the meeting was informed that the exams had been only postponed and shall be conducted at the due time. The Governor stressed for the timely redressal of public grievances and said that he had asked Chief Secretary to set up the Winter Secretariat at Srinagar. |
