Issue of West Pak refugees forces PDP to forge alliance with BJP | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 17: The central Government's plan on rehabilitating West Pakistan refugees in Jammu is said to have forced the PDP to develop cold feet on its idea of forging an alliance with the BJP for Government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. Informed sources in the party said that a section of PDP leaders was exploring the possibility of forming the Government in alliance with the Congress. The Congress has 12 seats in the Assembly and with 28 seats of the PDP the total strength of the two will touch 40 and the PDP is confident that it would be able to form the Government with the support of some independent MLAs. Sources said that the PDP is a divided party as far as the issue of forming the government in alliance with the BJP is concerned. Those who oppose any alliance with the BJP argue that since the voters in the valley had rejected the BJP it could be disastrous for the PDP in the valley, which is its area of influence. But others argue that PDP-BJP coalition rule could provide a stable and strong Government to the state. Such a formation could ensure proper development of the state. Reports said that while the PDP leadership was in two minds on the Government formation in alliance with the BJP is said to have decided to adopt a wait and watch policy after even the separatists cautioned the PDP leadership against forming the Government in alliance with the BJP. The plan of the BJP led government in the centre to rehabilitate West Pakistan refugees is said to have strengthened that section of the PDP that opposes ties with BJP for Government formation. However, political pundits feel intrigued over the latest move of some senior PDP leaders in exploring the possibility of forging ties with the Congress on the plea that when the PDP did not accept NC support saying that since the NC had been rejected by people in the elections there was no sense in forming the Government in alliance with the NC. These pundits pose a question to the PDP. Why should the PDP seek alliance with the Congress when it too has been rejected by people during the recent Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir? |
