Early Times Report

KARGIL, Jan 17: The world famous Chadar Trek has been closed for tourist movement and trekking due to blockage of Phuktal River somewhere between Shaday Sumdo and Shun. This was revealed by the Executive Councilor for Zanskr Affairs Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Kargil Skalzang Wangail while talking to Media. He further added that he has done an aerial survey with the Sub Divisional Magistrate Zanskar and during which they found that from Shaday Sumdo at a distance of 5.5 Km below Murshu, an entire portion of the mountain has moved down into the valley due to which the river has been blocked by a 200 ft slide. Due to this, a 5 Km long lake has been formed towards Shun due to the blockage of the river since 31st December and keeping in view the disastrous formation of the lake and its outbreak anytime, the movement of locals as well as tourists on the Chadar Trek will be restricted on priority basis. Meanwhile, MP Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang has requested the Home Minister to intervene in the matter as it is a matter for danger of low lying areas of Zanskar, Leh and Kargil along Zanskar and Indus River. Meanwhile a high level meeting under the Chairmanship of the Dputy Commisioner Kargil Mohammad Sadiq Sheikh was held to assess the situation created due to the blockage of the Lungnak River near Shun Shaday. The meeting was attended by the Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil Skalzang Wangail, Officers from Army, BRO, NHPC and Air Force.
It was decided during the meeting that the movement on Chadar Route will be stopped immediately and directed the SDM Zanskar to submit a report for shifting of villagers along the river bank.
