Arid weather, dry canals adding to woes of farmers : Hamid | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 17 : People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Hamid Choudhary expressed grave concern over arid weather conditions prevailing in the state have asked the irrigation and flood control department officials to ensure enough water in canals so that crops could be irrigated well in time. Farmers are facing acute shortage of water and whatever is available in canals is also not reaching tail ends due to which crops are dying. Chouhary Hamid said due to ongoing dry spell the Rabbi crop is almost on the verge of destruction and on the other hand canals have also dried up leaving no scope for irrigation. He said that farmers' community in the state is on the verge of facing great hardships in days to come and keeping in view their condition the irrigation department must ensure adequate water in canals so that crops could be irrigated. "Every year multiple schemes are made for augmenting irrigation water in canals but on ground nothing substantial is done that leaves farmers high and dry. He said that many farmers, during last year's floods had lost their fields which were virtually come into water courses. In many areas bridges and culverts were washed away due to which farmers are unable to reach their fields. Even after lapse of five months, nothing substantial has been done so far," he alleged. PDP leader while drawing attention of government towards farmers' community demanded immediate release of adequate water in canals so that crops could be saved. He said that farmers are facing the brunt of weather as well as department due to which they be left with nothing in hand in days to come. They are passing through most sensitive phase and government must stand by them while pro providing them with water facilities for irrigating their crops. |
