SRINAGAR, Jan 21: The state government seems to have shelved its plan of laying the alternate highway despite the fact that survey was done many times in this regard.
The importance for the alternate highway has assumed significance as the existing highway isn't enough to absorb the growing rush of the vehicles.
The government had planned to come up with an alternate high way to facilitate the smooth movement of the vehicles, but as of now it seems to be a distant reality.
"People of Budgam district were delighted to hear that an alternate by-pass would be laid since most of the length of the proposed road would pass through the district. It would have certainly explored the chances of employment for the people of the district," said Ulfat Ahmad from Soibugh-Budgam while talking to Early Times. There has been no improvement in the road infrastructure which is as it was some 30 years before. To ease the traffic movement on the existing highway, the government had formulated a plan to lay six lane road from Galandar-Pampore to Narbal to facilitate the smooth movement of the vehicles. The aim behind this project was to divert the rush of the heavy vehicles along with the rush of the other vehicles which continue to make rounds between the two capitals of the state, responsible for carrying goods and passengers. It would have also helped in easing the pressure from the existing by-pass. Ulfat said the alternate road would have proved effective in minimizing the chances of traffic jams which continues to give tough times to the commuters. At the same time it would have served the purposes in a better way as far as far the coordination between different distant places is concerned. Demarcations were made and also the people associated with the agriculture were served a notice that since the government is going to take over the land for the purpose of road laying they should not take up the agricultural activities in the demarcated area.
"Party after party came here marking the agricultural land and at the same time telling that the government will complete the project by ending 2017. In fact the notices were sent in the past by the revenue department to the people telling them not to go far any agricultural activity in the demarcated area," said Ghulam Nabi from Wadwan. He said that he couldn't build a new house for him for the reasons that a road might be laid through the area. Even the government agencies came up with the advice not to take up any construction as it will in violation of the law. An Executive Engineer of R&B department on condition of anonymity said the survey for the project was done many times in the past. The engineer said the survey is almost complete but owing to financial constraints the work on the project hasn't been started as yet.
