SRINAGAR, Jan 21: Close on the heels of visit of President of United States of America, Barrack Obama, rumours are rife that members of minority communities in the Kashmir valley may be targeted by 'subversive' elements in order to create chaos among people in general.
Sources told Early Times that residents of some of villages in Tral area in South Kashmir are living in a fear that people of the minorities might be targeted on eve of Obama's visit. Some of the people in fact have raised alarm and sought help from the agencies so that any untoward incident is avoided.
"Over the past few days there has been movement of the gun wielding people in some of the villages of Tral. Residents of Hofoo village more so those belonging to a particular minority are quite terrified since the movement of gunmen has picked up over the past few days. The minority community members are quite apprehensive about their safety and are worried," said sources.
Sources said that majority of the members of minority community believe that it would be better for them to shift to some other place up to the time the 'fear' is over. These people are in constant touch with the members of majority community before they take any decision.
"Members of the minority communities are soft targets and they can be targeted by people who want to create trouble. The subversive elements are always on look out to create trouble and this they can do easily by targeting minorities. The police and security agencies have an important role to play in this whole scenario. Hopefully they would do their best so that any untoward incident is avoided," said sources.
Pertinently, Director General of Police, Kondavati Rajendra has already issued directions to his force to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during Obama's visit or on eve of it. The army has also directed its men to be on toes in order to foil any subversive activity within the state and also from across the border.
Sources said that security has been beefed up in areas and villages where the members of different minority communities are living as it is apprehended that they might be targeted by 'subversive' elements. These areas and villages falling in Central, South and North Kashmir are under surveillance of police and other security agencies ever since alarm has been sounded on eve of visit of President of USA.
It would be in place to mention here that in March 2000 more than 30 Sikhs were killed by gunmen at Chattisinghpora in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The killings coincided with the visit of then President of USA, Bill Clinton. Although, a probe was ordered in the incident nobody has been taken to task so far and confusion continues to prevail who killed the Sikhs.
In November 2010, when Obama visited India after being elected as President of United States there were some inputs about targeting of minorities in Kashmir valley. However, the inputs proved to be wrong since nothing substantial came out later on.
