Despite tall claims Passport Office fails to provide passports to thousands of applicants | | | Mudasir Tariq
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 21: Even though Regional Passport Office (RPO) here claims to render best services thousands of applicants are at a receiving end as they have not obtained their passports within a stipulated time. Thousands of pending applications mock at the tall claims of the RPO of streamlining the distribution of passports. One and a half years have passed ever since Abdul Rashid Naikoo had applied for a passport but till date he has not received the same. Like Rashid thousands of applicants have to go through the same pertaining to the lazy approach of the department. "I had applied for the passport in September 2013, since then I haven't received my passport. Even though all the verification has been done and don't have any suspicious record, I still don't understand why I am not getting my passport," said Rashid. Mohammad Hafeez Bulla, a resident of Nowhatta said that he along with son had applied for the passport seven months back. He said the verification was done by both police and CID, but still then he and his have not been able to get the passport. There are numerous cases where one family member gets passport while as the others are denied passports for reasons unknown. Even after proper online documentation at the office, large number of applicants' complaint that department has taken a rain check and they are facing hardships. "Every kind of documentation is done in front of the passport officials, they claim to finish all the work within three months, but only a few lucky one get their passports in these three months. Thousands of applicants have to wait for a long," said Naseer Ahmad Gashroo, a resident of Habak. Surprisingly while the government on one hand announces to provide passport to the relatives of ex-militants, there are a good number of people who have been denied the passport for the same reasons. "I wanted to go abroad for studies and applied for a passport. After several months when I was not able to get passport, I went to the office to seek the reasons, I was brazenly said that my cousin was a militant and I can't get passport," said Mohammad Burhan, a resident of Baramulla. Sixty year old Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat had applied for the passport to go for the Hajj, nine months have passed but he is yet to obtain the passport. "I inquired about the unnecessary delay several times. But they give strange reasons for it. I don't know whether I will be able to go to the Holy place or not," he said. Sources in the passport department reveal that in absence of any surveillance from the government and dearth of the staff, the office has been taking people for a ride. "There is an absolute dearth of required staff at the office, while the work load is immense. Despite hundreds of complaints about the lazy approach of the department in terms of the service rendering, no one has been put accountable and people continue to suffer," said sources. |
