Let Hindutva groups stop raking up extraneous issues | | | A number of Hindutva groups continue to create one or the other problem for Prime Minister,Narendra Modi who is engaged in the task of revamping India's economy and in giving a definite shape to its political luster. At times it is the call given by leader to Hindus to produce four children so that there was no dwindling in the Hindu population in the country.Others pledge to build the Ram temple.Yet others remain engaged in the reconversion plan. All these issues that have been raked up by some Hindutva groups have given a handle to the Congress and to other opposition parties to fulminate against Modi.Though Modi is not patronizing these groups, still the opposition leaders voice resentment and surprise over the continued silence on the part of Modi who otherwise is not as reticent as his predecessor,Manmohan Singh, was.Modi has and is highly articulate and that is the reason the opposition leaders smell a rat on the assumption that by remaining silent on these issue Modi may be lending an overt support to the Hindutva groups. 'Ghar wapsi', a reconversion drive, is back on the agenda of Hindutva groups working in western Uttar Pradesh but this time the strategy would be different.Instead of much publicised attempt to convert the minority communities, the right-wing groups are planning to keep a low profile and start a fresh campaign mid-February onwards in western Uttar Pradesh. The areas on their radar are villages in Gorakhpur, Shahjahanpur, Hathras, Meerut, Aligarh, Bijnore, Agra districts. Reports do suggest that Modi has expressed his resentment over the way these Hindutva groups were raking up issues that were controversial and could vitiate the atmosphere in the country. As a result of his intervention the RSS-affiliated groups, especially the Dharam Jagaran Samanvay Samiti (DJSS) which is active in western UP, has been asked to maintain a low profile but spread its cadres in the interior rural areas of these district and identify families, mainly Christians and Muslims. The renewed strategy comes after the RSS had to send Rajeshwar Singh of DJSS, on leave following his publicised conversion campaign in Aligarh on Christmas last year and his frequent controversial statements. The RSS had to ask the DJSS to cancel the programme scheduled for Christmas as it had become source of major embarrassment for the Narendra Modi government and had led to the Opposition cornering the Government in the Parliament.According to the new strategy the DJSS would avoid converting people in public functions as was done during its failed attempts in December last year. As far as Jammu and Kashmir state is concerned these Hindutva groups have revived their campaign in favour of the abrogation of Article 370 that grants special status to the state within the union of India. These groups also oppose those in the valley demanding lifting of the AFSPA.The BJP led NDA Government's latest plan to grant citizenship rights to the West Pakistan refugees settled in Jammu has come up for sharp reaction not only among the separatist camps but among the valley centric mainstream political parties, including the PDP and the NC. Even in this sector people and political leaders in the Kashmir valley blame Modi for supporting the idea of granting citizenship rights to the refugees from Pakistan and for its plan to abrogate Article 370 when Modi has not spoken in favour of abrogation of Article 370.Instead he has suggested that there should be a debate on the issue and find out if the special status has benefitted people in the state or not.It is time for these Hindutva groups to help Modi in building the economy of India so that the growth rate touches a new high.Modi has been trying to attract investment in the industrial sector from foreigners. He is trying to secure investment in promoting energy generation and in defence production so that India zis able to fulfill its mission of exporting "make in india" goods. And if these Hindutva groups remain engaged in raising and raking up extraneous issues it could destabilize peace which may discourage foreign entrepreneurs in investing in India.Let these groups help Modi in building peace and promoting progress in India.Let them keep these extraneous issues under the carpet till there is all round economic improvement and political and security stability. |
